The wrong side of history
rather depends on
where you’re standing
— and when —
and which way you are
facing at the time.
Such things are not fixed.
Values change, the world
moves on and old age often
reveals that a lot of things,
we thought were simple,
are marvels of complexity.
The gender assigned at birth
may not match your genetics.
Or who you’re attracted to.
Or who you know yourself to be.
The interaction of all these things
are what make us who we are.
You can avoid learning,
but others won’t.
You can crave the safety
of that childish simplicity
but those of us who navigate
these waters — cannot.
Biology is not Destiny.
We know this with a certainty
you can only dream of.
We know who we are
because we have had to fight
for every inch of acceptance.
And there is a wave coming.
Trans-kids who have been
raised as men and women.
What will you say to them?
What excuse will you give
to justify your refusal to learn?
And in the meantime,
what will you say to the families
who have lost loved ones
because people like you
made the world to hard
for them to live in.
